The history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and its conductors, from its inception to date.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra began when a group of citizens became concerned with the city’s reputation in the arts at the end of the 19th Century. As Chicago grew and gained renown as a center of industry and commerce Charles Norman Fay took a trip to New York, representing a group of Chicago’s leading citizens, and met with the respected German conductor Theodore Thomas.

Thomas had gained a reputation as a leader in bringing symphonic music to America. Not long after this meeting Theodore Thomas was established as the leader of the Chicago Orchestra, now known as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Thomas remained music director until his death of pneumonia on January 4, 1905.

The next person to fill the role of conductor for the Orchestra was the assistant conductor, the 33 year-old violinist Frederick Stock. The young man had been established as the assistant in 1899, after displaying incredible talent and skill following his move from Germany to join the Orchestra. He served as Conductor until 1942, serving a total of 37 years. He was replaced by Defauw in 1943.

Defauw only served as director for four years, before moving to Indiana where he served as music director for the Gary Symphony Orchestra. Another short-term replacement followed with Artur Rodzinski filling the place of Defauw from ’47 to ’48, his tenure was interrupted by conflicts with the management. Rafael Kubel came next, leading the Orchestra from 1950 to 1953. During Kubelk’s time the first fully distinctive recordings that presented the signature sound of the Orchestra and its hall to full effect.

Fritz Reiner followed with the longest career since the death of Stock, lasting nine years. With Reiner’s induction as Conductor, the Orchestra regained its stability and direction. He was known as a man fiercely committed to his music with standards that were difficult to meet, to the benefit of the Orchestra. He served as Conductor from ’53 until ’62 when he was forced to step down due to failing health. He died of pneumonia in New York on November 15, 1963. He was followed by Jean Martinon, who served in the position for five years until ’68.

After the departure of Martinon, Sir Georg Solti became the Conductor for the Orchestra. Solti served in the position for a total of 22 years, making his career the second longest in the history of the orchestra. Solti’s relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra had actually begun in 1954, when he first led the Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival and even after he stepped down as conductor he continued to make guest appearances until his death in 1997. He was succeeded by Daniel Barenboim, who spent 15 years as conductor before being appointed the 2006 Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard University.

The most recently appointed CSO Music Director is Riccardo Muti, who begins his tenure in the 2010/2011 season. Chicago Symphony Orchestra tickets are an important purchase for any music fans or residents of the Chicago area, as an integral part of the history of music and culture. If you find these tickets hard to obtain, be sure to try online.

Is violin hard to learn? How long will it take to learn the violin? Am I too old to start learning violin? These and other questions answered about learning to play the violin.

People who want to learn to play the violin often ask: Is violin hard to learn? How long will take to learn the violin? Am I too old to start learning violin? Like learning anything new, it takes dedication, persistence, enthusiasm and the desire to want to practice as much as one can in order to succeed.

Practicing violin cannot become a chore or something that needs to get done. Just like anything else, some people will have an innate ability or gift to play violin and will learn faster than others. You never want to compare yourself or your progress to others. Judge your progress by how much effort you have put into learning violin.

It helps if you set short term and long term goals for yourself, even mini-goals within a practice session. Perhaps your long term goal is to perform on stage in one year at a school or community event. A shorter term goal would be to learn vibrato in a certain amount of days or weeks. An example of a mini-goal could be to learn how to tune your violin properly at today’s practice.

You’ll have to decide if you want to take private or group violin lessons from a violin teacher. Your budget may help determine this choice. If it is not within your budget to take lessons from a teacher, there are lots of other options available to you.

There are certainly plenty of how-to-play-violin books and DVDs available at your local book store or online. There are also online violin courses that you can download for a fee straight to your computer. And for those who have even a tighter budget, there are also plenty of free resources. If you do a search online, you will find that there are lots of violin sites that offer free mini-lessons, videos and tips on how to learn to play the violin.

Do you have to be young to learn to play the violin? Not at all. Plenty of adults learn violin and can become quite masterful when they set their mind to it. You can argue that some adults later in life have more spare time to devote to learning an instrument than say a 20 or 30 year old who’s busy with careers, raising a family and the like. It’s never too late to learn. It is all about mindset and your willingness to learn that determines your success.

If you want to learn to play the violin, join an online violin forum or two. Within these forums you can ask fellow violinists, from beginners to advanced pros, any questions you may have. The more seasoned violinists enjoy sharing their knowledge and will be more than happy to answer your questions. No one will tell you that learning to play the violin is easy. There will be days when you get frustrated, but don’t give up. Even Itzhak has bad days.

Author: Taylor Turnstone has a Learn Violin community blog where he hopes to bring together fellow violinists, especially those who are beginners and want to Learn to Play the Violin.

Due to the cost of both the violin the lessons, many people believe that only the wealthy or the privileged play the violin. Usually it is difficult to find a teacher who is both experienced and reasonably priced within people’s budget.

Although the violin can be a difficult instrument to play, once you become a skilled player it is a talent which is with you forever and cannot be taken away from you. Violins have grown in popularity and are used in traditional forms of music such as classical, but also in many modern types of music such as pop, rock and even techno!

A talent like playing the violin is something which will certainly make you stand out…

When you decide to learn to play the violin the next step is to take part in an online program in which you will learn at your own pace from a master violinist. Learning from a master violinist is important in developing some of the more complex skills required of a violinist, and this is easier when your teacher earns his living playing the violin rather than teaching.

Online programs are recommended as it can take a long time to master techniques and the program offers learning in your own time and in privacy. Online learning programs can be bought for less than the price of 2 hours of private instruction, the first few hours of which are usually spent getting to know the instructor anyway.

A tranquil and relaxed environment is crucial to aid the learning process of playing the violin, and having someone looking over ones should while playing can be off putting. This is why a violin teacher should be the last resort if you want the right environment for your lessons. When first learning to play the violin many finger skills are not required so learning via an online system can be ideal as it saves both time and money.

Never let anyone steal your dreams, if it is your dream to how to play violin. Give it a 100% effort.

As an adult, there is much to think about when looking for a violin on the internet. These considerations consist of price, locality of the violin, superiority, and things being offered with the violin. One should surf the internet for a reputable old violin shop in order to locate high-quality violins for sale. In any purchase you make the first and foremost concern is the cost.

When shopping for a musical instrument this cost can be outstanding. The cost of a fiddle can run anywhere from one hundred dollars to one million dollars. The violin you choose will probably be somewhere between these. A cheap instrument is not worth the time and energy involved. For a decent violin expect to pay at least one thousand dollars. It you do not want to spend this, consider learning to play a different instrument.

When looking for an old violin shop online, you could be connected with stores a great distance away. If you need to ship the instrument over long distances, this additional cost could be outrageous. Also the instrument could be damaged. Violins are sensitive to heat and cold and humidity. If you are going to ship the instrument you will definitely want to buy insurance. Otherwise, look for an old violin shop that is near to your location so that you can go and pick it up.

The quality of the instrument is very important. There is no use in learning to play a bad quality instrument because it will never sound good. It will also be more prone to breaking and slipping out of tune. This is why you need to consider the cost of the instrument when making your decisions.

When purchasing a fiddle, many factors should be taken into consideration. For instance, the inclusion of the case and bow in the sale price should be determined. Cases and bows for violins can be very expensive and the prices for these may be negotiated separately, making a good price too good to be true.

The violin is an intricate instrument. It is very delicate and sensitive to its environment. It is possible to buy a few violins that are good quality but are broken in some way or another and take the pieces to a repair shop and get them mended together. This is a lot of work, but could be a cheaper alternative.

There are a number of violin shops where people can buy a violin. Many shops sell both new and used violins, giving buyers a number of options. Many violin shops also offer violin rentals. New violins can cost between two hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Used violins can cost significantly less, but may be of lesser quality. Beginners and students often choose to rent a violin from a violin shop.

There are different types of violin shops. Some sell all kinds of instruments and offer violins from several different manufacturers. Other violin shops may make their own violins and many not sell any other brands. Obviously, the larger stores will have a better selection, but they may not have the same type of knowledgeable service and sales staff to help shoppers find the right violin to fit their needs.

Smaller violin shops that make their own violins can be more expensive, but they often provide the best customer service and help people find exactly what they need.

Buying a used violin can be a great way to save money and still get a quality product. Used violins can have the same quality of new violins at half the price. It is important to make sure that the violin is in good condition before handing over any money. It is a good idea to get some type of warranty on used musical instruments in case they are defective and need to be repaired.

Many violin shops also offer violin rentals. Some people, especially children or high school students may lose interest in the instrument. It is good to be able to simply return it rather than have to resell it if this happens. Violin rentals are very economical, often costing as little as $20 a month.

The type of strings used on a violin has a great effect on the sound of the instrument. Different kinds of strings can have different tones and sound. Also, strings made of some materials stay in tune longer and often last longer than others. The three most common types of strings are all metal strings, synthetic core strings, and gut strings.

All metal, or steel core strings are known for their volume and their pure, clear tone. They have great pitch stability and stay in tune even after they are first put on the violin. Many country, bluegrass, and jazz players prefer to use steel core violin strings because their simple and direct sound does not have the complex overtones found on some other sets of strings.

Steel core strings are the easiest to play and are popular among beginning and intermediate level players. One criticism of steel core violin strings is that they can have a slightly thin or metallic sound that is not well suited to classical music.

Synthetic core strings are usually made of a type of nylon called perlon. They have a thick, rich sound that is subtler than steel core strings. New synthetic core strings have less pitch stability than steel core strings and take a day or two to properly stretch out and stay in tune. Once they have stabilized, they do not need to be tuned often and have a good, consistent tone.

Gut core strings are known for having the warmest, most complex sound of any violin strings. Most classical players and soloists prefer gut core strings for their rich overtones. Gut core strings are not recommended for beginners or intermediate players because they are much harder to keep in tune and can have an instable pitch.

Each type of violin string has its own advantages and disadvantages. On kind of string is not necessarily better than the others, people who play different types of music on the violin prefer different strings.
